About Competition

With three decades of high-speed industrialization, China has become a large producer of renewable energy, new energy, and green building materials. Since the concept of green building was introduced into China in 2004, green building and related industries have also made great progress. Rapid development also has its defects, e.g. the disconnection of rapid developed green building materials industry and design application. The design industry can not quickly adapt to the development of green building materials industry, so many new green building materials,new energy-saving technology and equipment meets obstacle in the process of promotion and application.

As the first building materials research institute in New China, a large scientific and technological enterprise be subordinate to the Central Government, the largest comprehensive research institute and technology development center of building materials and inorganic non-metallic new materials in China, the Chinese Academy of Building Materials Science has the responsibility to accelerate the promotion of new green building materials and energy-saving technical products. This is the beginning of hosting this competition.

The establishment of ecological civilization is an important part of the 13th Five-Year Plan of China. The vigorous development of green and sustainable buildings can not only improve the living environment and promote the development of the people's livelihood but also form a new pattern for the harmonious development of man and nature in the modernization drive. It is the strategic direction of the National Development in the new era. The aim is to pursue the progress and harmony of society, economy and environment. At the same time, China has pledged to stop increasing carbon dioxide emission by 2030, and plan to increase the proportion of non-fossil energy in primary energy consumption to about 20%. The competition responds to the national development strategy in the new era and it is a rare historical opportunity to further promote and accelerate the development of green buildings and related technologies. The goal of the competition is to achieve near-zero energy consumption and ultra-low emissions of building. It is guided by the principle of "economy, applicability and beauty". It also integrates achievements of both international academic institutions and design firms, what is corresponding to the contemporary life style and aesthetic consciousness in the process of building China's new urbanization.

The previous sustainable (green) architectural design competitions were basically propositional, and how to achieve the proposition was depended on the contestant. In this competition, we envisage using pre-selected renewable energy, new energy, new materials, new technologies as the design and creation media, just like providing painting materials for the way to artistically create a green building in accordance with the climatic characteristics of the climate zone. Unlike the previous technology stacking design, we expect the results of the competition to meet the requirements of passive priority, active support, cost-effective control and can be applicable in a given climate zone.

The theme of the 14th Green Building Congress is "Promoting Green Building to the Age of Quality", which is also the purpose of this competition. Throughout China's contemporary green building history from empty to the all-round development, now it’s time to change emphasis from quantity to quality. Earlier this year, the first oversea project to be certified as a three-star green building operation was completed, marking the beginning of international recognition of China's efforts to develop green buildings.

Under the background of globalization, the convergence of cultural life is increasing. The resulting spiritual demand for local characteristics and cultural traditions is also growing. The inheritance of tradition is not simply a copy or a symbolic interception, tradition is also developing, we need to take the contemporary life style as the basis, treat its value as the standard, abstractly inherit and develop the traditional characteristics. The participation of international contestants may allow us to discover more possibilities of inheriting and developing traditional Chinese architecture culture.

Competition Expectation:
1、 As the achievement of the 14th International Conference on Green Building and Building Energy Conservation, it’s not only the academic summary of the previous congress, but also the prospects for the future development. It will be permanently included in the agenda of the International Conference on Green Building and Building Energy Conservation. The demonstration park concept will follow the basic principles of ultra-low energy consumption & emissions and even zero energy consumption, which embodies its academic, professional and systematic nature, showing the effectiveness and role of building energy, materials and applicable technologies in the lifespan of use through exhibition.
2、 Using renewable energy, new materials and new technologies as the media, we can artistically create architectural art works adapt to contemporary life style and aesthetic consciousness by using architectural techniques.
3、 (1) To be the standard for the new urbanization development in the future in certain climate zone, (2) to be academic exchange platform for international sustainable (green) building pioneering concept and forward-looking technology design and application, (3) to establish the real-time energy consumption dynamic monitoring station and technology for renewable energy, new energy, new materials and applicable technology in the actual use process. 4、 Promote the application and demonstration of new green and sustainable building products, and promote the development of industry to the high-end of trade chain, industry chain and value chain.
5、 It will be held in different climate zones in China to reflect the integrity and authority of the competition.

About Competition Construcion Land
Competition Construcion Land——Wujin green building industry cluster demonstration district, Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province

Changzhou city in Jiangsu province is located in the center of beautiful and fertile Yangtze River Delta, south of the province. With more than 2500 years’ history, it is a developed modern manufacturing city, it is also a national ecological demonstration city. The Shanghai Nanjing railway, Shanghai Nanjing expressway and the Grande Canal was passing through the city.Local climate belongs to the northern subtropical marine climate, rainfall is abundant and four seasons are distinct, which makes it belong to the typical hot summer and cold winter climate zone. Changzhou is in rainy during late spring and early summer , it’s hot and rainy in summer, the highest temperature is usually above 36 ℃, winter is humid and cold. The territory is dominated by plain geomorphology. Annual average precipitation is 1091.6 millimeters. Total sunny time is 1940.2 hours per year, which is much more abundant than the other cities’ of China at the same latitude.

The candidate area for the competition is located in the green building industry cluster demonstration district of Wujin District, Changzhou. It is located in the southwest of the Center of Wujin District, with convenient traffic. Its total area is 15.6 square kilometers. Wujin green building industry cluster demonstration district is the only national green building industry cluster demonstration district established by Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. It’s a new experimental mode to explore the green building industry development, to create a sustainable pattern of city, to promote sustainable lifestyle.The demonstration district contains: modern service area for green building industry, sustainable residence demonstration area, green building materials industrial park, energy-saving and environmental friendly facility park, green building industrialization park and green building international exchange park.Construction goals: world-class, leading green building exhibition &experience platform, green building industry cluster zone, green building technology integration platform, green building innovation and entrepreneurship zone, green building international communication platform.In the region, Yancheng site covers an area of 300 hectares, which was constructed in the Spring and Autumn Period, with more than 2800 years of history, is the oldest and best preserved ancient city in China.   • 1Design should base on selected site. The total area of each building is around 800 square meters.
  • 2Designed building is used for office or corporate regional marketing headquarters, specific program are determined by contestants. The layout of building should be took into consideration such as feasibility and retrofit of future enterprises.
  • 3 The number of building stories, building control lines and line-attaching rate of the competition demonstration buildings should meet the general rules of block control. See details in the Master Plan of the Sustainable (Green) Building Demonstration Park.The building height is no more than 24 meters and no more than 4 floors.
  • 4There are specific competition rules, results submission requirements and evaluation criteria on the website

  • 6The supporting buildings and landscape will be planned and designed by the competition organizers. The competition projects need not to consider independent basement and parking space, and the park will build a unified underground garage.

Besides the necessary design instructions, the names of the participants, contact information, instructors (if any), schools and departments (or design institutes) should be indicated.
  • 2、 Deliverables (1), (2), (3) and (5) can be integrated separately according to the needs of evaluation and browsing. The total number of pictures should not exceed 5 sheets of A1. Deliverable (4) size should be A1 sheet.

Her research achievement has been awarded ten national and ministerial level technological progress awards, and nearly forty papers have been published.

    Stefan Behnisch has been an advocate of sustainable design since he started working as an architect. His first building abroad, the Institute for Forestry and Nature Research in Wageningen, NL, became a milestone for innovative sustainable solutions. In 2009 he received a Good Design Award in the category of “People”, presented by the Chicago Athenaeum and the European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, in2007 aGlobal Award for Sustainable Architecture, in 2004 an Environmental Champion Award, presented by Interiors & Sources Magazine, USA and in 2002 an Award "Trophée Sommet de la Terre et Bâtiment" for Sustainable Architecture, France.

    Massimiliano Fuksas(Italian Architect)

    Massimiliano Fuksas has been Visiting Professor at a number of universities such as: Columbia University in New York, the École Spéciale d'Architecture in Paris, the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Wien, the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart. From 1998 to 2000 he directed the “VII Mostra Internazionale di Architettura di Venezia”: “Less Aesthetics, More Ethics”. From 2000 to 2015 he was the author of the architecture column - founded by Bruno Zevi - in the Italian news magazine "L'Espresso". From 2014 to 2015 he was, with his wife, the author of the Design column in the Italian newspaper "La Repubblica". Since many years he has been devoting special attention to urban problems in large metropolitan areas.

    Italian architect Mario Cucinella is amongst the most important architects practicing in Europe today with multiple award-winning international design projects. Not only is Cucinella’s work lauded for design excellence but he is an undisputed global leader in sustainable practices ranging from individual residences to urban master plans. The impact and significance of his work – both social and environmental – achieved in his role as an architect, educator and in service have been recognized world-wide and most recently (2016) by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) who bestowed upon him the prestigious International Fellowship. In 2017 the American Institute of Architects (AIA)awarded him the prestigious Honorary Fellowship. For the 2018 Venice Biennale, Mario Cucinella will be the curator of the Italian Pavilion.

She lead Shenzhen Institute of Building Research office building is a pioneer demonstration green building in China.

    SONG Yehao(Professor of Tsinghua University, Director of Institute of Architecture & Technology Research)

    Dedicated in study of sustainable building design, sustainable construction technology, the modernization of vernacular architecture and localization of modern architecture--Chinese native implementation. As well as urban research and urban design, sustainable urban design. His research topics include: His research topics include: the sub subject of Sino British joint research project: "Zhangjiagang Eco Farm housing design research". He has independently completed the final Chinese and English report. The discipline establishment of School of Architecture, Tsinghua University: "eco architecture research" (Tsinghua University's "985 topic").     HU Jianxin(Senior Advisor of China Merchants SheKou Holdings, Former CSO-Chief Sustainability Officer)

    Mr. Hu has been in long-term commitments to R&D, demonstration and implementation of green habitat concept. He has led a number of green habitat projects, such as Taige serviced apartment in Shenzhen , the first Green Building in greater China with the LEED certification in 2005, and another project, “the Hills” in Guangzhou which won the first Habitat Business Awards for best practices of the United Nations in 2009. Mr. Hu has planned and organized the International Green Habitat Forum since 2004. Mr Hu is one of the founder of the NGO Shekou community foundation in Dec. 2014.

    MENG Chong(Vice Director of Green Building Research Center, Chinese Society for Urban Studies)

    He has been engaged in scientific research and standard compilation of green building, building energy saving and green eco city for a long time. He has participated in the study of seven national science and technology supporting programs, five international cooperation projects, two Ministerial level projects. He involved in the compilation of several multiplied level standards, e.g. the national "green building evaluation standard", etc.

    LUO Shuxiang(Technical director of Beijing Building Technology Development Co., Ltd.)

    She is committed to the comprehensive technology research and engineering practice of green building and urban ecology. As a well known expert in her professional region, She has completed twenties related research projects, including serveral national supporting projects, participated in the compilation of twenties relevant standards. She has applied for more than ten technical patents and published forties papers.

  • CAO Yiqiang(Dean of Art & Humanity School China Academy of Art, Member of Art Discipline Evaluation Group of the State Council)

    He has been engaged in research of Western art history, history of Communication of Chinese and Western art, history of European oil painting. His research on art history, relationship between art history and history of ideas is unique in China. As convener of art discipline review group of the State Council, Professor Cao was committed to the related work of the development of art education. Under the efforts of him and related experts, at the beginning of 2011, the twenty-eighth meeting of the diploma committee of the State Council examined and approved Art as an independent subject category.

  • How do you complete the contest registration process?

    A: After receiving the login account number sent by the organizing committee and using the account to log in to the website to select the competition site, the registration process is completed.

  • Requirements for building area, height and storeys.

    A: The area of each plot is basically the same in this competition.The buildings are multi-storey buildings. The number of building floors is about 3-4 stories. If you think the buildable range is too small, it can be allowed to increase to 5 stories, you must consider the impact on the surrounding buildings. The total area of the building is controlled at 800 ± 20 square meters.

  • What is the function of building?

    A: the main function of competition building is office and exhibition. The building will be the marketing office center of the enterprise. Other functions need to be considered by the participating teams themselves, such as some innovative exhibition methods and functions etc. The interior space should be modified, but it will not be converted into a house.

  • On the same site, our team has prepared project A and project B. Can they both submit at the same time?

    A: One team can only submit one project on the same site. If there are multiple projects, please choose a better project to submit.

  • Do we need to select materials in the material list in the download center? Are other materials available?

    A: The list of materials provides most of the existing green building materials and equipments in China, which can provide a reference for the selection of materials for participating teams. The team can specify material types, appearance and performance requirements, and shall not specify manufacturers. It is recommended not to use very rare materials.

  • Do we need to provide accurate data for building energy consumption simulation?

    A: About building energy consumption simulation or other design simulation, they are essentially design tools, and the data provided are theoretical data. What is needed is that the team can use these simulation results to  optimize the project, rather than sticking to accurate data.
